Eco Council

Our Eco Council is made up of 2 children from each year group who have been elected to the role through a class vote. We meet every other week, sometimes more often, and have many projects on the go!

This year we are working towards achieving Eco-Schools green flag status.

We have chosen to concentrate on 3 main areas;

  • Biodiversity

  • Energy use

  • Water

Please see our Action Plan below.

We have planted 15 new native trees to create a new habitat in our school grounds. Each class has a tree they are responsible for taking care of. We hope to add to this area by building a bug hotel.

We took part in Switch Off week where we asked the school to consciously use less electricity and have placed stickers near switches to remind children and staff to turn lights off when leaving the classroom.

With the help of Mr Appleby, we have installed a water butt to collect rainwater and the Eco Council will use this to water the plants in the courtyard area.

At the beginning of the school year, the Eco Council members collected seeds from our wild flower area and will store them, ready to plant when the weather warms up again in the Spring term. This is a great way for us to be able to keep growing new flowers without having to pay for new seeds each year! It was also a really fun activity and helped us to learn the names of some of the wild flowers we were growing. The insects love this area and we saw lots of bees and even some butterflies as we collected the seeds.

The Eco Council wanted to see what animals might be living in our wooded area ay the back of our school and so set up a camera trap. So far we have caught a glimpse of a fox but are hoping to capture other species too. Watch this space!

We have been adding to the planting in our courtyard area to improve biodiversity. We added Spring bulbs to support bees by giving them some pollen early in the year.

Look at it now!

During a lunchtime meeting, we make some bird feeders by sticking sunflower seeds into apples and threading doweling through them so birds had somewhere to perch whilst eating. We hung them around the courtyard to encourage birds into this area.

Another lunchtime, we made a bug hotel by collecting sticks and cutting them to size to put into a box that was kindly donated to us. We are going to put this in our courtyard area to encourage biodiversity in this area.
