Personal Develpment and Well-being

Personal Development and Well-being

At Woodside Junior School, we believe that education extends far beyond academic achievement. Personal development and wellbeing are at the heart of everything we do, ensuring that every child flourishes as a confident, resilient and compassionate individual. Guided by our core values of being curious, collaborative and kind, we provide a nurturing environment where children feel safe, valued and inspired to grow.

Our approach to personal development is carefully planned and woven throughout school life. We support pupils to develop a strong sense of self, positive relationships with others, and an understanding of their place within the wider world. Through a rich and purposeful curriculum, children learn to recognise and manage emotions, build respectful relationships, and develop the confidence to express their ideas and beliefs.

Wellbeing is central to our work. We prioritise pupils’ emotional and mental health through strong pastoral care and a culture of openness and support. Staff know our children well and ensure that every pupil feels listened to and cared for. We teach children practical strategies to support their wellbeing, helping them to develop resilience and cope with challenges both now and in the future.

Personal development at Woodside is enriched through a wide range of opportunities beyond the classroom. We offer extensive enrichment activities that broaden pupils’ experiences, develop their talents and encourage them to explore new interests. Our strong links with the local community further enhance learning, helping children to understand diversity, develop empathy and appreciate the world around them.

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is embedded across our curriculum. Through carefully chosen texts, dedicated teaching of spirituality, and opportunities for reflection and discussion, pupils are encouraged to think deeply, ask questions and develop their own values and beliefs. We celebrate difference, promote inclusion and prepare our pupils to be thoughtful, responsible citizens.

Safeguarding is integral to all aspects of personal development, including within the curriculum. We ensure that pupils understand how to stay safe, both in the real world and online, and know how to seek help when needed.

This page provides access to further information about how we support our pupils’ personal development and wellbeing, including our approach to safeguarding in the curriculum, enrichment opportunities, SMSC provision, spirituality, pastoral care, and community links.

At Woodside Junior School, we are proud to nurture pupils who are not only successful learners, but also curious thinkers, collaborative team members, and kind individuals who are ready to make a positive contribution to the world.
